letter can be your most important marketing tool
because they are usually your first introduction
to the person who is hiring.
Many advertised positions
vacant attract a large number of resumes and often
the person screening job applications is looking
for a reason to reject applications rather than
accept them. Therefore, it is important that you
put a lot of thought and effort into your resume
so that it will not only be accepted but be seen
above the rest.

of Resumes
Your resume should have
a format which will best reflect your aim in securing
a position. Some people have multiple documents
for different purposes. There is no one correct
style or format. The different types are:
• Chronological Resume
where the last or present position is listed first
in the work history, and previous positions are
listed working backwards. This format is the standard
used.
• Reverse Chronological Resume is the opposite,
the first position is written first working forward
to the last or present position. This format can
be used when the early positions are more relevant
to the job applying for than the latest positions.
• Functional Resume has the selection criteria
as headings and skills are matched to the headings,

Barrier Busters
Even though there are antidiscrimination
laws in place in some countries, many mature aged
job seekers still find it difficult to get to
the interview. These tips may help:
• Do not state your date of birth in your
resume. If there are antidiscrimination laws,
the employer is not required to know or ask for
this information.
• Do not mention dates in the education
section of your resume
• Use the chronological format and only
go back 10 years in your work history.

Your Resume
Once you have completed
the Activity for this workshop you will be ready
to send or submit your application.
• Be careful to follow the instructions
stipulated in the advertisement. If the employer
wants you to send 3 copies of your resume, you
should do so.
• Attach a short 1 page covering letter
clearly stating the position you are applying
for. Make sure you include any reference names
or numbers.
